Library membership

The Library of the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office provides reference books, publications on different branches,    loan of Nordic music CDs, documentaries and feature films in VHS and DVD formats   for using on spot or loaning home. The Library has a wide range of Nordic newspapers, magazines and dictionaries,  NCM publications in English and Nordic languages. There is free access to internet at the library for study and research purposes.

Joining the Library

In order to receive a library card, you should fill in an application form available at the reception and return it to the staff. Library services such as borrowing books, CDs, movies and use the internet free of charge will be at your immediate disposal.

Your Library card will be mailed to your postal address within one month. You will always need your Library card to use the Library.

Finding the Item You Need

Data on books, music and films are in the Library electronic catalogue. Books, music and films are in the main room of our library. Books are arranged according to the subject (see the shelf marks in the main library room). Thus the Library items are shelved according to class marks and the items with the same class mark are located alphabetically - according to the author's surname or the first word in the title of the item.

Magazines and newspapers are in the reading room next to the reception. Please ask the staff for details.

Borrowing Books, CDs and DVDs/videos

Books, CDs and videos/DVDs may be borrowed from the reception during visiting hours of the Library (see Visiting Hours). You will always need your Library card to borrow library items. The reader may borrow maximum up to 9 items at the same time: 3 books, 3 CDs and 3 videos/DVDs. You can take DVDs home if you deposit 10 LVL for each borrowed DVD.

The maximum loan period for books is 4 weeks. NB! Books marked with a red spot are reference only. The maximum loan period for CDs and videos is 1 week, for DVDs - 3 days.

Returning/Renewals of Books, CDs and DVDs/videos

Library items may be returned to the staff at the reception in person. Books, CDs, videos and DVDs can be renewed (only once) unless another reader has reserved them. Renewals can be made in person at the reception, by telephone +371 672211006,  +371 67820089  or by e-mail: info@norden.lv.

Responsibilities of the Library Reader

  • you must have a valid Library card to enter the Library and borrow material  
  • you are responsible for books, CDs and videos/DVDs issued on your Library card
  • you must not lend your Library card to any other person and must immediately report lost or stolen Library card to the staff of the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Latvia
  • you must return or renew (only once) borrowed books, CDs and/or videos/DVDs before the due date. For materials not returned in due date the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office keeps the rights to charge 0,01 LVL for each item per delayed day
  • you must treat the borrowed items with care
  • DVDs are lended out only if you deposit 10 LVL for each borrowed film
