Icelandic presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2009

In 2009, Sweden is due to pass on the rotating presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers to Iceland. At the Nordic Council Session, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir H. Haarde, presented the new presidency program called The Nordic Road Map. Iceland gives priority to cooperation in research and innovation, particularly emphasising energy issues, climate change and environment.
The four pinnacles of the program are: the Nordic Driving Force, the Nordic Strength, the Nordic Climate Challenge and a Globalised Region.

According to the Icelandic Minister for Nordic Cooperation, Björgvin Sigurdsson, the above-mentioned priorities manifest the greatness of Nordic co-operation ambitions in the wake of the Nordic prime ministers’ new globalisation policy. One of the currently most crucial tasks for the Nordic countries is to jointly discern the ways how environmental technologies and renewable resources might reduce the undermining effects of climate change.
