The international conference “The Ombudsman in the democratic state governed by the rule of law” is organized by the Latvian National Human Rights Office with the support of the Nordic Council of Minister’s Office in Latvia and will take place on 4 December, 2006, a.m.10.00-17.40 p.m., in the “Reval Hotel Latvija”, hall “Beta”, Riga, Elizabetes street 55. On 6 April 2006 the Latvian Parliament (the Saeima) adopted new law On Ombudsman. The law provides that the new ombudsman institution will be established on the basis of the Latvian National Human Rights Office starting from 1 January 2007. The aims of the conference “The Ombudsman in the democratic state governed by the rule of law” are to discuss about the role and functions of Ombudsman institution in Latvia and other countries, to analyze different aspects of activities of this institution, as well as to aggregate and sharing the best practice and opinions about the problems of protection of rights of a person with similar institutions in other countries.
