    The seminar developing critical media literacy in children

    Understanding the importance of citizens’ competencies in critical thinking for safe, open and democratic society, the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Latvia in cooperation with the Latvian Safer Internet Centre are organizing a range of educational seminars. The seminar will be held in Daugavpils, Rezekne, Valmiera and Riga. 
    The aim of the seminar is to highlight the importance of strengthening the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) skills among the teachers, to exchange various experiences and best practices form Nordic countries, to map the education landscape in Latvia, as well as practice in the workshops. It is important to understand that children and young people are the ones who are the most exposed to new media, social media, and at the same time they are the ones who often lack abilities to independently and critically evaluate what they encounter in the flow of media and information.
    The seminar will feature the following speakers: Kadri Ugur, the media researcher from the University of Tartu, Liene Valdmane, the media expert from the Latvian Safer Internet Centre, Leo Pekkala, Deputy Director of the National Audiovisual Institute in Finland, Aiga Grisane, the Head of Media Policy Division of the Ministry of Culture, Klinta Ločmele, the Expert of Media Policy division of the Ministry of Culture, Solvita Denisa Liepniece Assistant Professor of the Vidzeme University of Applied Science.
